Chapter 16
Present Day
What do you even wear to the house of a man who kissed you last night, but with whom you have to work today?
Apparently, thatâs the million-dollar question as I stand in front of my closet in my lavender cotton underwear and bra, pulling out and putting back every single option I see. I pull on a light sweater and grab my favorite jeans, but then think better of it and swipe my phone open to check the weather. As I suspected, itâs unseasonably warm and humid unlike yesterday, when it was cold enough for this outfit. I pull the sweater off and toss it in a corner with a frustrated little noise as my phone rings. I answer without looking at it with a gruff hello.
âWake up on the wrong side of the bed today?â Macâs amused voice comes from the other end of the line.
âToday is the day Iâm supposed to go to Benâs to work,â I grumble. âIâm headed back over there in a half-hour.â
âJenny Green.â Mac sounds positively giddy. âDonât tell me youâre worried about what to wear.â
âItâs not my fault climate change has ruined temperate Midwest autumns from now until the end of time,â I whine.
She laughs, but I think itâs more at my discomfort than my dark humor. âYouâve known Ben for, like, nine years. Heâs probably seen your entire wardrobe at some point. Put something on and donât think twice about it.â
Sheâs right, of course, but this feels different somehow. Maybe because he had his tongue in my mouth last night. And maybe because I really liked it. I sigh heavily, pinching the bridge of my nose and sitting on the edge of my bed.
âDid you need something, Mackenzie?â
âI wanted to hear all about you and Ben, obviously. Is he as good at tongue wrestling as he is at actual wrestling?â Sheâs trying very hard not to laugh at her own joke, and I hear Daniel groan dramatically in the background. Great. Theyâre both laughing at my expense. Excellent.
âRude,â I mutter.
âPayback,â she says sweetly. Sheâs got a point; I used to tease her about Daniel all the time. I just never thought it would come back to bite me.
âUnless you are planning to be helpful, I need to go get dressed in⦠something.â I glower at my closet. âIâll call you later, okay?â
âOh, come on,â she whimpers. âYou canât send me some cryptic message about dessert last night and then not give me every delicious detail.â Daniel makes a gagging noise before his muffled voice announces heâs moving to another room. I consider giving Mac the details she craves, but this feels different from my other escapades.
âI can tell you it was, indeed, delicious, but Iâm not saying more than that until I get a chance to talk to him. Which is fairââI raise my voice slightly to drown out her protestsââconsidering youâd feel the same way about coworkers knowing your business.â
âUgh. Why do you have to be so reasonable?â she grouses.
