Chapter 16

Present Day

What do you even wear to the house of a man who kissed you last night, but with whom you have to work today?

Apparently, that’s the million-dollar question as I stand in front of my closet in my lavender cotton underwear and bra, pulling out and putting back every single option I see. I pull on a light sweater and grab my favorite jeans, but then think better of it and swipe my phone open to check the weather. As I suspected, it’s unseasonably warm and humid unlike yesterday, when it was cold enough for this outfit. I pull the sweater off and toss it in a corner with a frustrated little noise as my phone rings. I answer without looking at it with a gruff hello.

“Wake up on the wrong side of the bed today?” Mac’s amused voice comes from the other end of the line.

“Today is the day I’m supposed to go to Ben’s to work,” I grumble. “I’m headed back over there in a half-hour.”

“Jenny Green.” Mac sounds positively giddy. “Don’t tell me you’re worried about what to wear.”

“It’s not my fault climate change has ruined temperate Midwest autumns from now until the end of time,” I whine.

She laughs, but I think it’s more at my discomfort than my dark humor. “You’ve known Ben for, like, nine years. He’s probably seen your entire wardrobe at some point. Put something on and don’t think twice about it.”

She’s right, of course, but this feels different somehow. Maybe because he had his tongue in my mouth last night. And maybe because I really liked it. I sigh heavily, pinching the bridge of my nose and sitting on the edge of my bed.

“Did you need something, Mackenzie?”

“I wanted to hear all about you and Ben, obviously. Is he as good at tongue wrestling as he is at actual wrestling?” She’s trying very hard not to laugh at her own joke, and I hear Daniel groan dramatically in the background. Great. They’re both laughing at my expense. Excellent.

“Rude,” I mutter.

“Payback,” she says sweetly. She’s got a point; I used to tease her about Daniel all the time. I just never thought it would come back to bite me.

“Unless you are planning to be helpful, I need to go get dressed in… something.” I glower at my closet. “I’ll call you later, okay?”

“Oh, come on,” she whimpers. “You can’t send me some cryptic message about dessert last night and then not give me every delicious detail.” Daniel makes a gagging noise before his muffled voice announces he’s moving to another room. I consider giving Mac the details she craves, but this feels different from my other escapades.

“I can tell you it was, indeed, delicious, but I’m not saying more than that until I get a chance to talk to him. Which is fair”—I raise my voice slightly to drown out her protests—“considering you’d feel the same way about coworkers knowing your business.”

“Ugh. Why do you have to be so reasonable?” she grouses.
